What Is Agri-Tourism?

Agri-tourism is the collaboration between two of Kawartha Lake's top industries - Agriculture and Tourism. It presents the consumer or tourist with an opportunity to engage in a direct exchange of values between themselves and the farm community - whether it is at the Farmers' Market, on a farm tour, at a fair or agricultural event or at a country vacation farm or market garden. Consider Agri-Tourism a collection of agriculture-based attractions, events and services.

In Kawartha Lakes, we have a growing number of Agri-Tourism attractions, events and services. From traditional livestock shows to modern culinary lessons by professional chefs on their very own farm, there are many experiences to take part in while touring Kawartha Lakes. Each autumn, many of our farms open their doors to welcome visitors during Kawartha Farmfest. This two day self guided driving tour takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving and features local farms and local food while inviting visitors to Celebrate the Harvest with our farm families. See emus as they wander in their outside pen and ask questions about these large birds during regular presentations. Emus stand from 5 to 6 feet in height and can weigh up to 150 lbs when mature. Emus normally attain their full height within 12 months. Female Emu birds lay dark green eggs that can weigh on average around 1.5 pounds. Emu meat products, including meat pies are available for sale as well as knitting and woodcrafts.

16. Kinmount Farmers’ Market  
A charming small market set in the park by the river.  Open every Saturday May to Oct. from  9am – 2pm.  We have fresh home grown produce (some organic), herbs, plants, shiitake mushrooms, home baking, specialty breads, etc., unusual preserves, herbal remedies, honey and candles, maple syrup, crafts, lamb, beef and more.
